Tennis Tip #10: One-Handed vs. Two-Handed Backhand

Arrowhead Tennis teaching professional Nick Hansen discusses the pros and cons of the one and two-handed backhand in this video. Which should you use? They are both great shots, one is not better then the other, they both simply have advantages and disadvantages. Using two hands on the backhands generally provides more power and control and is easier to use and learn from the get go. But, the one-handed backhand provides more reach and more versatility. It is generally easier to use two hands on the return of serve. Ultimately, it comes down to the preference of the player. When starting out, it is good to try both shots and see what you are more comfortable with. Examples of great two-handed backhands on the pro tour are Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic and examples of great one-handed backhands on the pro tour are Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka.
